Lawn Mowing & Garden Care in Harkaway

The main difference on a Harkaway property is scale of edge, not just scale of lawn. A compact suburban lawn might have twenty metres of edge; a lifestyle block can have several hundred metres of fence line, driveway, garden bed and structure surround. That's what drives the time on site and the quote.

Slope and ground condition matter too. Parts of Harkaway sit on undulating ground, so we mow across the fall rather than up and down where that's safer, and we work around uneven patches instead of scalping them. Where the ground is soft after rain we'll usually reschedule rather than leave wheel ruts across a lawn.

We run walk-behind mowers, brushcutters, line trimmers and edgers. We do not run a ride-on mower or a slasher at present, and we'd rather tell you that before quoting than turn up underdone.

Bigger blocks tend to come with bigger garden beds, and they're usually where a property starts to look neglected first. Weeding and re-mulching beds, clearing leaf and dropped material out from under established trees, and cutting hedges and shrubs back to a clean line makes more visual difference on these properties than an extra mow does.

We also take on small tree pruning — low branches over the driveway or lawn, deadwood in ornamental trees — within what's safely reachable from the ground. Anything requiring climbing or a chipper we'll refer on.

A one-off makes sense when the grass has got away over a wet stretch, when you've been away, before a family event, or when you're preparing a property for sale or inspection. On a larger block that first cut is genuinely a restoration job and takes longer than a routine visit.

Regular maintenance is the cheaper path on a property this size, because the recovery cost of letting a large area go is much higher than on a suburban lawn. Plenty of one-off jobs here turn into a recurring visit through the growth season for that reason.

Growth rate isn't fixed — it moves with temperature, rainfall, irrigation, sunlight, grass species and soil condition, so two lawns in the same street can need different schedules.

Through winter most lawns here slow right down and can go a long time between cuts. From late winter into early spring growth picks up as soil temperatures rise, and spring is usually when lawns need mowing most often. Over summer it depends on water: an irrigated lawn keeps growing hard, while a dry unirrigated lawn can slow to almost nothing in a hot spell. Autumn often stays active for a while before tapering off, and on Harkaway blocks with mature trees it's the leaf load rather than the grass that drives the visits.

Harkaway is a small community — the primary school, Harkaway Hills College, the general store, the tennis club and reserves like Jessie Traill Reserve and Dalton Reserve, with Harkaway Road, King Road, Noack Road and Boundary Road carrying most of the traffic through. We work on private residential properties across the area and are usually up this way alongside jobs in Berwick and Narre Warren North.
